About CheckThisCaller

Why this exists

Unknown numbers call constantly, and it's rarely obvious whether one is a real person, a legitimate business, or a robocall. The FTC and FCC already collect complaint data about exactly this, but it's spread across two government portals in a format built for regulators, not for someone staring at a ringing phone. CheckThisCaller pulls both sources into one place so a lookup takes seconds, not a trip through a government website.

What it is, and isn't

This site reports on phone numbers, never people. It doesn't try to identify who owns a number, doesn't do reverse lookups, and doesn't aggregate personal records the way a people-search site does. A result here is a count of public complaints tied to a number, sourced and dated, nothing more.

It also isn't a verdict. Phone numbers get reassigned constantly, so a number reported two years ago may belong to someone with no connection to those reports today. That's why report weight decays over time (see the FAQ for specifics) instead of a number staying flagged forever.

Where the data comes from

  • The FTC's Do Not Call complaint data, refreshed daily.
  • The FCC's Consumer Complaints data on unwanted calls, also refreshed daily.
  • Reports submitted directly by CheckThisCaller users, held to the same daily-rate-limited, abuse-resistant standard as the first two.

Every report on this site is self-reported by a consumer to a federal agency or to us. None of it is independently verified, and we say so on every result page.

Who runs this

CheckThisCaller is an independently built and operated site, not a product of, or affiliated with, the FTC or FCC. It's free to use for basic lookups; a paid tier funds ongoing data costs and hosting.
